A painting of Monument Terrace created by local artist Terry Coffey to commemorate the 300th Friday in a row of Supporting Our Troops was given to honor and recognize each of the ten WWII Marines.
Let us respect and honor brave Marines while we still have the opportunity. At age 93 Lt. Colonel Philip Strader was the oldest of the ten Marines honored on Saturday October 20, 2007 by receiving a painting of Monument Terrace created by local artist Terry Coffey to commemorate the 300th Friday in a row of Supporting Our Troops. A Marine Officer in World War II, at age 92 Patsy Clare McMahon Kusiak continues to lead an active lifestyle in Lynchburg. At age 92 Marine John Cecil, Jr. reminisces about serving on Okinawa in 1945. Lynchburg’s Local Chapter Military Order of the Devil Dogs with men like Lee Cobb, Felix Jackson, Frank Leonard, Ken Tapley, Rob Merryman, and Past Commandant Steve Bozeman, realize the importance of recognizing this generation of brave Marines as 1,000 WWII veterans are dying every day.

At 90 and one half years of age Colonel J. Shelton Scales recalls landing on Iwo Jima February 19, 1945 and spending 38 days there as Major-Battalion Commander. He was a member of 3rd Battalion 23 Marine-4th Marine Division. Of the 40 officers in his Battalion only Colonel Scales and two others were not killed or wounded. Colonel Scales likes to quote the 4th stanza of the Marine Corps Hymn: “God on High sees eye to eye with the United States Marines.”

Born in Bedford County 87 year old Warren J. Tuck enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 4, 1942 and had his first combat experience on Guam Island July 21, 1944. As a member of the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Regiment, 3rd Batallion, he landed on Iwo Jima only to see Mt. Suribachi in the background. At age 86 Jahue Mundy was a 19 year old sergeant in Demolition 1st Marine Division attached to 5th Marine Division when he spent 3 days on Iwo Jima. Guam, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Peleliu were the four landings he experienced.

At age 84 John Fowler was a 21 year old Gunnery Sergeant who served on board the USS Missouri off the coast of Iwo Jima. After 26 years he became a Master Gunnery Sergeant, the highest NCO rank. He was in Korea on Nov. 27, 1950 for the Chosin Reservoir Battle when 300,000 Chinese entered the border. His wife Pat Fowler enlisted in the United States Marine Corps March 18,1945

William Ondo, James Swan Rigney, and Wesley Clayton Dixon are age 81. Ondo was awarded the Purple Heart when he lost his left eye in 1945 Iwo Jima. Swanson belonged to the platoon whose members raised the flag above Mount Suribachi. Dixon was wounded on D-Day but returned to Iwo later for 28 days. He was a member of the 4th Marine Division, First Battalion, 25th Marines.

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and Delegate Lacey Putney presented $95,000 to the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force at Bedford County Sheriff Mike J. Brown’s Office on Friday afternoon, October 19, 2007. Virginia Beach Police, Richmond City Police, Albemarle County Police, Christiansburg Police, and Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office were the five SOVA ICAC affiliate law enforcement agencies from across the Commonwealth who shared the grant and are determined to expand the effort.

“I am delighted that the General Assembly approved our request to provide some needed financial support for project Blue Ridge Thunder. I also want to thank Senator Steve Newman and Delegate Lacey Putney, both of whom were instrumental in getting this appropriation approved. Blue Ridge Thunder is a wonderful public safety program that is working to combat child pornography and keep our children safe on the Internet. Anything we can do to help promote this project and its important work is a sound investment in Virginia’s future. Sheriff Mike Brown did the heavy lifting in this endeavor. Be aware of dangers in allowing kids to use the Internet unsupervised,” said Lt. Gov. Bolling.

Drug Trade Around Bedford CityDealt Heavy Blow With 14 Arrested PDF Print E-mail
Written by By Carollyn Lee Peerman, Press Media Group, LLC
Friday, 26 October 2007

A heavy and significant blow was made to the drug trade in and around Bedford City, and most specifically Liberty High School, on the evening and night of October 18, 2007 by the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Bedford Police Department, VSP, VABC, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, and the Blue Ridge Regional Jail as they conducted raids throughout the Bedford County, Bedford City, and Pittsylvania County.

The majority of the arrests were made at Liberty Apartments, with 14 individuals being arrested. All arrested at Liberty Apartments have been charged with “dealing drugs within 1,000 feet of school property.” Other charges have been placed, but this is believed to be the most significant one. It sends a signal that law enforcement is serious about children and will do whatever is necessary to protect them from the drug dealers who often time target students.

These investigations resulted in a special grand jury which returned 112 indictments/warrants on 30 individuals. Liberty Apartments has been widely known as a drug rendezvous point with “open air” market appeal for drug dealers/users.
